Davide Bartesaghi may find his role shifting under Ruben Amorim, with the coach viewing him as an option at left-sided centre-back rather than solely as a wing-back, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The reframing comes with Milan's defensive recruitment effectively finished. Gazzetta reports that the incoming business is done barring a late opportunity, so anyone still hoping for another central defender is likely to be left waiting. That closes off the market and pushes Amorim towards solutions already inside the squad.
His three-man defence currently counts four established starters: Mario Gila, Matteo Gabbia, Strahinja Pavlović and Koni De Winter. Behind them sits new arrival Sankhoun Diawara, who needs time to develop before he can be leaned on.
The picture thins from there. Fikayo Tomori is set to leave, and there is uncertainty around Filippo Terracciano, who is more of a right-sided player in any case. That leaves Bartesaghi, whom Amorim rates as capable not only on the flank but as a left-sided centre-back.
Bartesaghi earned his place last season almost by accident, stepping in when Pervis Estupiñán was injured in the autumn and holding onto the spot once Allegri handed it to him. The complication is that Amorim asks for something Allegri never did. His wing-backs need explosiveness, the ability to drift inside and quick, direct running, and that profile sits at odds with Bartesaghi, who is attentive but measured in how he moves the ball.
The clues point in one direction. Amorim has frozen Estupiñán's sale, and the arrival of a talent like Diego Moreira at Milanello adds another attacking option on that side. Should Estupiñán stay, Bartesaghi's most natural path into the side may be alongside Pavlović in the back three rather than ahead of him.
From here, much depends on whether Estupiñán remains, a decision that would settle where Bartesaghi lines up in Amorim's system.
