Mario Gila and Christopher Nkunku are both expected back in Milan training this week after their tests returned positive results, according to Luca Bianchin (via MilanNews).
Injury scares in pre-season carry an extra weight at Milan, because recent history has taught the fanbase to fear the worst. Last season the club never managed to get Rafael Leão and Christian Pulisic fit at the same time for months on end, and the treatment room too often dictated the campaign. So when two summer arrivals picked up problems before the season had even started, the alarm was understandable, especially with fresh money invested in both.
Nkunku sat out the friendly against Celtic in Scotland with a muscle strain, while Gila was dealing with a problem to his right rectus femoris. In both cases the scans came back without serious damage, which is the outcome Allegri needed.
Gila is the one who will need a little more patience. Bianchin reports the defender should return to full team training in around a week, which rules him out of the Derby della Madonnina on August 5. That is not ideal for a new centre-back still learning his surroundings, but missing one early fixture is a price worth paying to avoid a longer layoff.
Nkunku is further ahead. The Frenchman is expected back with the group within the next couple of days, so his integration barely loses a beat.
For a squad that spent last season firefighting fitness problems, a pre-season scare that ends with two quick returns is exactly the kind of luck Milan rarely had in 2024/25.
