Mario Gila was forced off during Milan's 2-2 friendly draw with Celtic on Saturday after feeling tightness in his right thigh, with medical tests set for tomorrow.
Preseason results barely register, but fitness does, and this is the worst possible timing for a scare. Gila arrived from Lazio this summer for around €30m to be a cornerstone of Amorim's back line, and Milan reshaped their defence partly around him. Any muscle problem now, weeks out from the start of the campaign, threatens to cost him the buildup he needs to settle into a new system with new teammates.
According to MilanNews, Gila felt the tightness in the thigh and chose to come off rather than push it and risk turning a niggle into something longer. That is the sensible call in July. The tests tomorrow will tell Milan what they are actually dealing with.
Amorim, speaking to Sky after the game, played it down: "Gila felt something, but I don't think it's anything serious. I hope and think he will recover soon."
Coaches say that about most preseason knocks, and the muscle scans usually decide the story rather than the manager's optimism. Until Milan see the results, Gila's involvement in the final friendlies stays in question.
