Milan are working to complete more incoming business before the window shuts, with a centre-back and an attacking midfielder both still on the agenda even after Diego Moreira's arrival.
The push comes from Ruben Amorim's demands for his squad, and the man doing the legwork is a familiar one. According to Tuttosport, agent Jorge Mendes held lengthy talks with the Milan management on Wednesday over the next moves to satisfy the coach.
The priority is in defence, where Mendes is looking for a centre-back who is preferably left-footed and comfortable both centrally and in the position occupied by Strahinja Pavlović. The name that keeps coming back is the one that headed the list when the window opened: Sporting CP's Gonçalo Inacio, Amorim's top pick. For the attacking midfield role, the target is Pedro Goncalves, another player the coach knows well from Lisbon.
Both deals run into the same problem, and it starts at the selling end. Sporting have already let go of Trincao, Hjulmand, Diomande and Quenda this summer, and parting with another major name would leave a hole they may be unwilling to accept. On that basis, even Mendes is unlikely to talk the asking price down, whichever of the two Milan pursue.
There is a fallback in mind for the final days. Tuttosport reports that Matias Soulé's name has cooled somewhat inside Casa Milan in recent days, but his profile is one Milan intend to keep tracking in case an opportunity opens late, particularly now that Roma have added Rodrigo Mora.
The gap between what Milan want and what Sporting will accept has not been quantified, and no figures were attached to either target. From here, the pace depends on how quickly Milan can trim the squad and free up the room to spend.
