Milan are set to complete the signing of Omari Hutchinson before the mercato closes, with Ruben Amorim among those convinced the move can work in Serie A.
On paper, bringing in a midfielder who did not light up the Premier League to help cover the loss of Rafael Leão will not stir much excitement. Yet the profile matches the recruitment brief Milan have set themselves this window.
At 22, Hutchinson has already made more than 60 Premier League appearances, scoring 4 times and adding 9 assists. Young, tested at the top level, and with room to grow, he fits the parameters Milan have stuck to.
The reasoning behind the deal is laid out by James Horncastle in The Athletic. According to his report, Milan expect Hutchinson to produce more in a side that dominates the ball more than his previous employers, and Amorim already knows the player from his time coaching Manchester United in the Premier League. The structure of the deal, a loan with an option to buy, gives the club room to judge how he settles in Italy.
As Horncastle writes: “Milan believe Hutchinson’s output will improve when playing for a more ball-dominant team — with new head coach Ruben Amorim familiar with the player from his time coaching Manchester United in the Premier League — and that the loan-with-option structure of the deal gives them time to assess the 22-year-old’s fit in Italy.”
The financial side keeps the risk low. Milan are paying only a few million for the year-long loan, a modest outlay measured against the other names on Amorim's shortlist. If the fit is right, the option can be triggered; if not, the commitment ends.
For a squad reshaped by Leão's departure, a low-cost loan with a coach already sold on the player is the kind of bet Milan can afford to make.
