Milan have opened initial talks over a move for Atalanta wing-back Nicola Zalewski, according to MilanVibes.
The interest is tied directly to an outgoing move. With Zachary Athekame closing in on a loan to Lyon, a space has opened on the flank, and Zalewski is one of the names Milan's management have looked at in recent hours to fill it.
Milan are not alone in the race, but contact has already been made with the player's entourage. On the other side, Atalanta are willing to let him go, viewing the Pole as a player who can be sacrificed. No fee has been reported at this stage.
The tactical logic is where the move makes sense. Zalewski's profile does not fit Maurizio Sarri's 4-3-3, but it suits the demands of Ruben Amorim's system. Right-footed yet more comfortable on the left, he likes to cut infield to use his dribbling and crossing, and he can also operate on the right, giving Amorim an option down either side.
There is a squad-list benefit too. Born in 2002, Zalewski is Polish but came through in Italy, having joined Roma's academy in 2011. Under UEFA rules, eight of a club's 25-man squad must be products of the domestic system for Serie A sides, and Zalewski qualifies as one of those slots, a detail that carries weight when Milan build their list.
From here, the question is whether Milan can move ahead of the other interested clubs, with Athekame's departure setting the timeline.
