AC Milan have completed the signing of 20-year-old defender Sankhoun Diawara, who put pen to paper at Casa Milan on Tuesday and was unveiled by the club this morning.
The interesting wrinkle here is where he lands in the pecking order. Early reports had Diawara pegged as a Milan Futuro addition, a project for the B-team rather than the first team. That has changed. He is now expected to serve as backup to Strahinja Pavlović, which matters because Milan's left-sided centre-back depth has been thin, and a France U19 international arriving as senior cover rather than a youth punt tells you the staff rate him higher than the original framing suggested.
Diawara completed his medical and signed his contract before the club confirmed the move. In the announcement, he gave his first words as a Milan player.
“I think the day I see San Siro will remain etched in my mind forever. I can’t wait to make my debut and meet the Rossoneri fans, my teammates, and all the staff,” he said.
“I’ve loved football since I was little, and little by little, I’m realising my childhood dream. I was born with a ball at my feet, and every time I step onto the pitch, I do it to give 200%.”
The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. At 20 and with youth-international pedigree, the appeal is obvious: low-cost cover with room to grow, exactly the kind of low-risk squad-building Milan have leaned on.
Whether he stays glued to the bench behind Pavlović or earns real minutes will come down to how quickly he adapts, but going from projected Futuro signing to first-team squad member before kicking a ball is a promotion in itself.
