Modric commits to another season at Milan: “Hungry for redemption”

Luka Modric will stay at Milan for another season, with the club confirming his renewal on Wednesday evening.

This one wasn't a given. Before Ruben Amorim walked through the door, the noise pointed towards Modric drifting back to Madrid and winding down a career that has almost nothing left to prove. Amorim clearly changed the calculation. Keeping a 39-year-old Ballon d'Or winner on the books isn't about minutes-per-game math, it's about what a player of that standing does to a dressing room that spent last season sulking through a year without European football. Milan need a spine, and Modric is exactly the kind of professional you build one around.

The extension keeps him at San Siro for the coming campaign, almost certainly the last of a career that has collected everything the game offers.

Modric addressed supporters directly in the club's announcement, and the tone tells you plenty about how last season sat with him.

“I’m happy to stay at AC Milan, a club where I’ve felt welcome and loved since day one. After a year that fell short of expectations, I’m immensely hungry for redemption. A new season and a new challenge await us: a project I believe in and that motivates me.

“I’m ready to continue giving everything for this jersey and I’m truly proud to wear these colours again. I can’t wait to return to San Siro and hear your roar. See you soon, Forza Milan always!”

The question a fan will ask is whether a player of his age can still carry a Serie A midfield across a full season. Milan will manage his load, which is why the shape of the rest of the midfield matters as much as Modric himself. What he offers now is control, tempo and a standard for younger players to measure themselves against, and that alone justifies a one-year deal for a player of his profile.

A year that "fell short of expectations" is the polite version. Amorim has convinced him there's a reason to stay and finish the story properly, and Milan get one more season of a player who still knows how to win.
