Christopher Nkunku, whose Milan future looked uncertain through much of the summer, is now shaping up as a genuine option in Massimiliano Allegri's attack under the tactical setup Amorim has in mind.
A month into pre-season, plenty remains unsettled at Milanello, and the biggest question mark still hangs over Rafael Leão, whose exit is no longer a certainty and who could yet stay. Around that saga, Nkunku has quietly made a case for himself.
The Frenchman scored Milan's only goal on the tour of Australia and Indonesia, a penalty he won himself to earn a draw against Inter. It was a small but pointed reminder of what he offers, especially at a moment when the attacking hierarchy is far from fixed.
The 3-4-2-1 is the shape that suits Nkunku best. Deployed off the left, he would be back in the territory where he made his name at RB Leipzig, the form that drew half of Europe's attention. The obstacle is the competition ahead of him: Leão, transfer permitting, and Christian Pulisic.
That is where the window opens. Both Leão and Pulisic have run hot and cold, and Pulisic is currently working back from injury, with a move to the right on the cards if no new attacker arrives. Any dip from either gives Nkunku the room to prove himself.
His versatility adds another layer. He can lead the line in a pinch, having spent last season as a second striker in Allegri's 3-5-2, and operating him as a central forward again under the current plans is not ruled out.
For a Milan attack still waiting on Leão's future to resolve, a forward who can cover the left, the right and the middle is exactly the kind of insurance the coaching staff will want on hand.
