Goncalo Ramos scored his first goal for AC Milan as Ruben Amorim secured a 2-0 victory over Venezia, becoming the first manager since Filippo Inzaghi to win his opening two league matches in charge.
The first home match of the season against newly promoted Venezia brought the usual pressure to pick up all three points. Milan delivered through a Ramos strike and an own goal.
Milan controlled the contest, leading in possession, expected goals, big chances and shots on target. Venezia held the advantage only in corners, getting one more than the Rossoneri, while their best openings were blocked before reaching Mike Maignan, leaving them with zero big chances registered.
Amorim now has six points from his first two fixtures, with his side scoring four goals and conceding just one. Inzaghi, the last manager to achieve this feat in the 2014-15 season, did so with a 3-1 win over Lazio and a chaotic 5-4 victory against Parma. Amorim has overseen his opening week with far more control.
The €74m summer signing ultimately found the net despite missing chances in the first half. Amorim said after the game that "one of the main qualities of the top players is that they don't let previous mistakes affect them negatively." Ramos applied that mentality, finishing from a tight angle with his left foot while a defender closed him down.
Average positioning data from Sofascore confirms Milan concentrated their attacks down the left flank. Strahinja Pavlović pushed high up the pitch, while Alphadjo Cisse frequently found space out wide, and both goals originated from that side. Ramos also dropped deep to involve himself in the build-up, with his average position sitting surprisingly close to the halfway line.
For a striker carrying the weight of a significant fee, getting off the mark early sets the foundation for a profitable campaign.
