Fikayo Tomori has no intention of leaving Milan this summer, even after the club spent €30m to sign Mario Gila, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport (via SempreMilan).
The context here is a defensive reshuffle that has pushed Tomori down the pecking order. Gila arrived to play on the right of Amorim's back three, which is exactly the slot Tomori has occupied. When a club spends €30m on a centre-back, someone already at the club usually pays for it with their place, and on paper that someone is Tomori. That is what makes his stance interesting: he is being nudged toward the exit and refusing to take the hint.
Gazzetta report that Tomori is no longer a guaranteed starter and will, at best, be competing for a spot. There has been talk of interest from England and even from Juventus. Yet the Englishman has drawn a line, exactly as he did roughly eighteen months ago, when Milan had agreements in place to sell him to both Juventus and Tottenham and he stayed put anyway.
A meeting between the club and his representatives took place in recent weeks. The plan, per the report, is for Amorim to run the rule over Tomori in the summer and then tell him where he stands. If Milan decide to sell, Tomori will weigh a plan B. If not, he stays.
Worth remembering how this piece of business would look on the balance sheet. Milan paid Chelsea €28.5m for Tomori in 2021, and he was central to the 2021-22 Scudetto. Cashing in now, even at a reduced fee, would still register close to break-even on a player who has given the club four seasons and a title. That is not a bad outcome, which is partly why the club can afford to let this play out slowly.
For now the decision sits with Amorim, and the summer assessment is the moment that settles whether Tomori is a Milan player next season or not.
