Francesco Camarda scored twice off the bench as Milan came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Celtic in Glasgow on Saturday, the club's opening friendly of the summer.
Preseason results don't count for much, and this one counts for even less given the state of the squad Ruben Amorim had to work with. Twelve players were unavailable through injury or extended breaks after international duty, so the line-up was stitched together from what was left, with academy names like Christian Comotto, Lorenzo Ossola and Andrej Kostic getting minutes they might not otherwise see. The real value here is in who impressed, and one teenager made sure the afternoon had a story.
The rust showed early. Milan were two goals down inside half an hour and both came from their own mistakes at the back. In the 12th minute Strahinja Pavlović's loose pass back to Lorenzo Torriani was seized on by Camilo Duran, who finished from close range. On 28 minutes it was the same script, Samuele Ricci's attempted back-pass falling short and letting Duran through, his square ball turned in by James Forrest despite bodies in the way.
Celtic took the two gifts they were handed. Milan had the ball in decent areas but no edge in the final third, with the hosts crowding the middle. Torriani at least ended the half well, clawing away a Luke McCowan free-kick that was curling into the top corner.
Amorim overhauled the side at the break, sending out a 3-4-2-1: Torriani; Gila, Odogu, Terracciano; Chukwueze, Fofana, Musah, Bartesaghi; Loftus-Cheek, Guernier; Camarda. It took two minutes to change the game. Camarda won a penalty and buried it himself into the top-right corner, then completed the turnaround on 52 minutes, glancing a Samuel Chukwueze cross inside the far post after heading an earlier chance from the Nigerian wide.
That is the detail worth holding onto. Camarda is 17 and coming off a loan spell with Monza, and with the Milan attack still short of numbers this summer, a preseason where he keeps scoring is exactly the audition he needs. Chukwueze setting up both goals from the right is its own small note, given how uncertain his future has looked.
The rest was a substitution parade, as these games tend to be. Silvano Vos and Emanuele Borsani replaced Loftus-Cheek and Bartesaghi on the hour. Valeri Vladimirov came on for Gila, who looked to land awkwardly after an intervention. Alphadjo Cissé replaced a lively Aurelien Guernier with 15 minutes left. Late on the sides traded openings, Musah having a shot blocked that looked bound for goal and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain flicking just wide for Celtic.
Two goals down to level with a patched-up squad is a fine way to start, but the takeaway isn't the scoreline. It's that Camarda spent the summer's first 90 minutes reminding everyone he can play.
