Federico Dimarco insists the Derby della Madonnina carries the same weight even in pre-season, ahead of tomorrow's meeting between Milan and Inter in Perth.
The fixture is the first pre-season derby staged outside the Trofeo TIM or the International Champions Cup, and it lands less than three weeks before Serie A gets under way. Whatever the result at Optus Stadium, it doubles as fitness work for both squads at a point where match sharpness matters more than the scoreline.
Speaking to the media in Perth, as relayed on Inter's website, Dimarco played down the friendly label while acknowledging the timing.
"Playing in the derby is always a great feeling. We know what it means. The most important thing is that it comes less than 20 days before the start of the season. This match and the one against Juventus will help us improve our fitness ahead of the new campaign," he said.
Asked about the value of academy products in the dressing room, the full-back pointed to a sense of belonging he sees as central to Inter's recent run of success.
"The derby always has a different feel to it. That sense of belonging has been one of the foundations of this group and has helped us win so many trophies over the past few years."
Dimarco also paid tribute to Franco Baresi, whose funeral took place earlier today.
"I'd like to express my condolences to Franco Baresi's family. He was a legend, someone who made football history and was admired not only by AC Milan fans but by supporters of every club."
For Milan, the appeal is simpler than any trophy. A win over Inter this early would give Allegri's side an early marker before the real business begins.
